Boudoir Sessions- What to Expect Before, During, and After

It's officially boudoir season!! Over the next couple of weeks I'm going to be sharing lots of tips, tricks, and resources with you guys to inform you more on boudoir sessions, how they work, why they're so amazing, and so much more! I think one of the most intimidating things about boudoir sessions is just the general lack of information about them, so I'm here to help!! This blog will walk you through the steps of before, during, and after your boudoir session! However, keep in mind this particular blog and process is specific to me and if you book a session with a different photographer they will have their own flow.

Before your session

Step one to planning a boudoir session is finding a credible photographer that you are comfortable with! Now, if you're reading this then there's a good chance you're considering me as you boudoir photographer, which is awesome! However, as you look at your other options PLEASE make sure you are considering safe, credible, experienced photographers. Boudoir is a very personal type of photography and you want to make sure you're in good hands! Make sure you're considering photographers with a professional, experienced portfolio. Having boudoir photos taken is such an amazing experience as long as you're in the right hands! Make sure you hire a photographer that knows what they're doing and can help provide a good experience! With that being said, I'm going to write the rest of this blog assuming you're having your boudoir session with me!

After you've booked your session with me I send you a contract to sign and a questionnaire via text or email. The questionnaire helps me get to know you, your expectations, and how I can help create the best shoot possible for you! It only takes 10-15 minutes to fill out!

The next step is to choose your location! I personally have my own boudoir studio located in Sevierville, TN and this option is always available for any client that books their session with me! You may also consider other locations! I have done in-home sessions before which is great if you're wanting your photos to document a more personal environment. Some venues and business will allow you to rent out their facility for an hour! For example I've done two boudoir sessions in the Ivey House in Seymour, TN that turned out amazing! You may also consider booking a night in a hotel, airbnb, cabin, etc. Then you have the space for your session and also get a little getaway!

You can also look into outdoor locations! If you have access to private property with permission from the owner this is the easiest and safest way to do this! However, it's not the only way! In the photo to the left Tessa and I were in a public field in South Knoxville. She was topless with pasties on and there was no nudity at all! It all really depends on how risqué you're wanting to get, property you have access to, and your comfort level! So as you consider location, talk to me! I'm here to help you every step of the way and I'm more than happy to help find the perfect location!

Next, is choosing your outfit(s)!! This is such a fun step, but can be a little overwhelming if you've never bought lingerie before and don't really know where to start! The most important part of choosing outfits for your session is making sure you choose things that make you fell confident and comfortable! I highly suggest you look at other boudoir shoots for inspiration, but remember that every woman is different and what one woman feels/ looks good in might not make you feel good and that is completely okay!! Choose lingerie pieces that scream you! Not every outfit has to be the classic black lace set. One of my personal favorite sets of lingerie I own is a yellow two piece set with colorful flowers embroidered in the lace! Is it traditional? No, but do I feel amazing in it? ABSOLUTELY! There's so many ways to feel sexy and confident! Do your research! Look into all the different kinds of lingerie there is out there because there is something for every body type out there! Not a lingerie kind of gal? That's totally fine too! Actually one of my favorite outfits to wear for a boudoir shoot is a sweater paired with my favorite tights, it's more on the modest side, but it makes me feel so flirty, fun, and spunky! If you're taking your boudoir photos as a gift for a significant other a really fun way to incorporate them in the shoot is to bring and wear one of their favorite shirts, flannels, jerseys, etc. paired with a cute pair of undies, tights, or worn over a bodysuit!

In correspondence with your outfit, any props you might want to include are welcome! Whether that be shoes, jewelry, pearls, flowers, a wine glass, a keepsake that's special to you or your significant other, toys, etc. Anything that you want to incorporate is fine by me! My goal is to make this shoot as personal to you as possible! For example, one time I had a painter bring paint and brushes to her shoot and at the end of the session we took some pics of her in jean shorts with paint splattered on her back and brushes tucked in her back pocket and it was so cute and so specific to her!

The next two things I highly suggest doing before your session go hand-in-hand. First, Make sure you try on all of your outfits before your session and they fit well! You don't want to get to your session and realize you have the wrong size. Also make sure you have removed all the tags! You don't want tags sticking out in your photos. Second, go to my boudoir portfolio or Pinterest or anywhere really, look at some of the poses the girls are doing, and practice them in front of a mirror. Now while you're doing this keep in mind that I will be posing you during the entire session so it's not your responsibility to memorize any of these poses. However, it is really good to practice some of them and help your body get familiar with how they feel. Let's be honest, none of us sit on the couch at home with out back arched, head thrown back, with our hands in our hair! 😂 A lot of these poses are going to feel unnatural, because they are! Familiarize yourself with some of them so you don't feel as out of place when it's time for your session!

Finally, before your session pamper yourself! If you shave, wax, etc. make sure you do that at the proper time! Don't do it the day of your session to avoid irritation though. I also recommend tending to your eyebrows the day before your shoot. Make sure your nails are done or clipped and clean if they're not painted--don't forget your toenails!! Whatever your chosen hair/makeup is have it finished before you get to your session. On the day of your session I highly highly recommend you wear lose clothing. Don't wear any tight underwear or bras (or just don't wear any at all if you're comfortable with that) to avoid any indentions on your skin. Honestly the best thing to show up to your shoot in is sweats! Also, make sure you use clear or gel deodorant! We don't want any deodorant streaks on your lingerie!

During your session

You've done all your preparing, now it's time to HAVE FUN!! I know that your first boudoir shoot can be nerve-wracking and intimidating, but I can assure you that I have every intention of making your session as comfortable, fun, and enjoyable as possible! The questionnaire I sent you as soon as you booked your session with me has prepared me to create an environment for you that you'll be able to enjoy! During your session the only thing you have to worry about is having a good time, listening to me, and asking questions when you have them!

The first think we will do when you arrive is plan out our session. If you've booked a session where you have multiple outfits I like to set out your outfits and plan out the flow for the shoot. Together we will decide which outfits look best with different sets of furniture. Between each outfit I step out and let you change! In my studio I use external lights along with my camera so the flash might take a few minutes to get used to but after a few shots you'll get the hang of the routine and feel like an old pro! Not only will I be your photographer for the session, but I will also be your own personal hype man because girl I promise YOU LOOK AMAZING!! I love to show you some sneak peeks on the back of the camera as we shoot to help boost your confidence and show you how HAWT you are!

I will be posing you the entire session. I do make sure to ask you if there's any specific poses you want to incorporate because I want to make sure we don't miss anything, but other than that you don't need to worry about poses at all. Most of the time I show you exactly what I want you to do as well because it's easier for you to see what I mean rather than me trying to use only words to explain it. So please don't fret over posing because girl I got you. And always feel free to ask any questions you have along the way!

After your session

After your session all you have to do is walk away feeling like the bad bit*h you are! After your session you will receive an online gallery of your edited images within two weeks of your session! It's usually way sooner than two weeks because I'm the type of photographer. that can't wait to edit your photos because I'm just as excited as you are! But the max amount of time you'll have to wait is two weeks.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope this blog helped answer some of your questions! I know there can be a lot of intimidation in the unknown so my goal is to provide you with the information you need to be more confident in your boudoir journey! Please feel free to message me with any additional questions you may have and I'll talk to you guys soon! Bye! 😊
